Scruffy Archie has a shaggy dog story to beat all others after going missing for almost two years.

The toy poodle was found in Oxford 160km (100 miles) from home in Essex – 549 days after disappearing.

He was reunited with stunned owner Julia Moran, from Corringham, on her 47th birthday.

‘When we heard the news, we thought we were in a dream because when we lost him it was like being in limbo,’ she said.

‘It is the best birthday present I could ever have.’

Dog wardens in Oxford examined Archie and found that he was microchipped and traced his owners.

He was dirty but not malnourished or injured when he was found, suggesting he had been looked after.
