One in three people use Twitter on their smartphone or BlackBerry on the toilet, a study has found, raising concerns the devices are becoming breeding grounds for nasty bugs.

One in 20 technology addicts uses a laptop while on the loo.

The habit was ‘inadvertently raising the risk of the spread of infections, which affect hundreds of thousands of people’, said John Nuttall of The Co-operative Pharmacy, which commissioned the study.

Almost one in three admitted not washing with soap after going to the toilet.

About 1million people a year fall ill as a result of poor hand hygiene.
